Type of apps
Currently there are three types of apps. They are desktop, mobile and web. Desktop apps are more fuller or expansive versions whereas mobile are considered to be an easy to use simpler versions.
Web apps are also considerably lighter in function but they rely heavily on one’s Internet connection or the web browser. They are usually stuffed like desktop apps but can function like mobile apps.
There is also an app called a hybrid app, which is considered a mix between a desktop and a web app. These apps have an offline, desktop interface but also have an open connection to the Internet for faster updates.
Amongst all of this, mobile apps have turned out to be a more popular version of apps because all it needs is a user’s finger to operate. Compared to this, web and desktop apps require a user to use his/her mouse or keyboard, which in today’s setup might not be the most favorable option.
Why exactly would anyone want an extra piece of equipment to take care of when everything can happen at the tip of one’s hands? Another reason why mobile apps are more popular is because they are readily available to download from platforms like App store in Apple or Google play and many others in a Windows system.
Examples of apps
Adobe Photoshop, MS Word and many others are just some examples of apps that exist in all the above three mentioned forms. This does not mean every other program exists in all the three types. Gmail for instance is only available as a mobile and a web app.
There are many games available in the market whose mobile and web versions exist but desktop does not. Similarly there are also cases where a desktop version of a game is available but the other two do not exist.
Designing an app
new techniques have been developed and many new ways have been introduced but when it comes to designing an app, the process has always remained the same.
Starting with an idea, designers and developers tend to think of many ideas before settling on one. According to an experienced designer, an idea that keeps on changing and evolving is considered a better performer and can guarantee better results.
However there are many things that need to be considered while designing an app. Some of the things are:
-
Profitability. Is the app that is being designed profitable to the designer/developer? One needs to think if his/her idea is worth the money or not. For instance, a designer/developer could be sitting on a potential million-dollar idea or could be heading for a financial disaster.
-
Is it being repeated? Another thing to consider is if your idea has been attempted before. If it has been attempted before, you might want to do something different from the other version. If it has not been attempted, it’s a clear path for you.
-
Technicality. Final component is if the idea can be turned to reality or not. What kind of tools would be required to design an app like this? Who would be the one taking care of the technical aspects? Are there any obstacles that might come across during implementation? These questions are some that need to be considered.
